3. How can I get your CDs ?
Try our CD shop at: http://www.synsoniq.com/

4. (Are you really THE Huelsbeck ?) :)
This is indeed the most often asked question, that I naturally always have to answer with "Yes..."

5. Which aspect of music is most important for you ?
Melody and harmony. Everything else is pretty exchangeable and just sets the mood or style of the music. I prefer music that keeps "staying in the ear", rather than music that sounds good in the very moment that it is actually being listened too.

6. Which of the famous musicians would you consider good and which bad ?
John Williams is in my opinion a great musician, because he creates absolutely perfect arrangements and melodies.

I really don't know whom I'd call a "bad musician", but in general I don't like musicians who fill their arrangements with too much distracting stuff. I.e. many Jazz musicians...

7. Which kind of musician are you in your heart ?
I don't want to be reduced to only one category of music. I like mostly melodic types of music, specially symphonic film scores, but also electronica.

8. Does the fact that you do music-on-demand reflect in your music ?
Well, when music-on-demand means tight deadlines, I sometimes end up doing the best stuff... but I also like to have time to refine my work.

9. Which are your plans in the future ?
I would like to work with a real orchestra. (Not a little ensemble, it gotta be at least 120 musicians :)

10. Where do you get  your inspiration ?
Movies and Soundtracks, TV (yes), Pop, Techno/Trance music. And women (only one at the moment ;)

11. Which styles of music do you like most and which not ?
My favorite music style is that of orchestral movie soundtracks. But I also like Trance and other electronic music. The least I like Jazz and opera music.

12. How old are you and since when do you make music ?
I am now 34 and I already began at the age of 4 to annoy my environment with music. ;). When I was about 14, I started composing my first complete songs and making music became my main job at age 19.

13. Do you still produce soundtracks for the Amiga at times ?
No, because there isn't really any serious demand for Amiga game development anymore. Don't get me wrong: I love the Amiga and always will, but I need to live and earn money to do so.

14. Did you ever compose MODs, S3Ms or XMs ?
No, since I've always developed and used my own music formats.

15. Is there a TFMX player for the PC ?
Yes, there are now even 3 different players. The first one can be found on my "Sound Factory" CD and comes along with almost all of my Amiga-TFMX files. But this player is DOS-Only and has some heavy bugs. A much better player can be found at http://listen.to/tfmx and it comes even as a WinAMP Plug In. The 3rd player is a part of the famous multi format Deliplayer (a former Amiga player), which is now available for the PC.

16. How long do you work on one song / CD ?
For one song - varying from one day to 6 months. Typically I plan one week (5 workdays) for a piece.

For a CD: 37 days, 12 hours und 4 minutes. :-) (But only if I find the time!)

17. How can one can I get into the business ?
Try to send demos to potential employers (software companies, me :) What is most important is a strong will and talent. See also the more detailed question and answer of no. # 31

19. Which equipment would you suggest to a beginner in your field?
The most important equipment is a fast PC (minimum Pentium 4 with 2ghz, 512 MB RAM, ASIO Soundcard, WinXP). Additional studio equipment should be a velocity sensitive MIDI / USB keyboard or a synthesizer/sampler like the Kurzweil K2xxx series. Additionally, you could buy an inexpensive but flexible synth-module like the Roland JV 1010. Also to consider are the new wave of really good virtual synthesizers and samplers. (But then rather go with the fastest PC and best soundcard you can afford)

20. Which are your favorite games ?
Chronicles of Riddick - Escape from Butcher's Bay, Crimson Skies - High Road to Revenge , Luigi's Mansion, Half Life, Mario 64, Creatures, Resident Evil, Solitaire, Tetris, Sentinel.

21. What do you do in your spare time ?
Spare time ? What's that ?

Seriously - my interests are: music (yes, also in my spare time), movies, friends, good food, clubbing, video games, digital photography and philosophy (just for fun ;).

22. Which people are your music idols ?
1. John Williams
2. Jerry Goldsmith (Rest in peace, you'll be always in my heart)
3. Alan Silvestri
4. Hans Zimmer
5. Danny Elfman
6. Ferry Corsten
7. Ennio Morricone
8. Pet shop boys
9. Propaganda
10. Vince DiCola

23. Is it possible to order the TFMX editor from you ?
The TFMX project was discontinued in 1989, after the programmer and I were cheated by a software company. Unfortunately this made further development impossible. Thereafter I only used a very complicated "patch version" of the editor, to finish my own music projects. It's impossible for me to offer or copy this version of the editor though, since there is no manual or other documentation available. Besides the program is meanwhile pretty outdated and the new mod-editors are much more easy to use.

24. What has happened to Factor 5 ? Will there be a new Turrican ?
Factor 5 moved to the USA in 1996 to develop games in collaboration with Lucas Arts as well as their own titles. A number of games are in the works, but unfortunately I'm not allowed to talk about them. I followed Factor 5 to the US in 1998 to compose music for their games and I also hope that there will be another Turrican-like project in the future.

25. Are you doing music for Turrican 3D from THQ?
No, none of the original developers asked me yet to do it. And I doubt I would have time anyways, since I am pretty busy doing music for Factor 5 projects.

*** Latest news (6/5/2000): I heard, that the Turrican 3D project was cancelled. Well, so much for that...

26. What did you feel when you heard music from the AMIGA for the first time?
I was totally amazed. It was an awesome piece of music in an adventure game called "The pawn".

27. Will you compose music for PSX2 (Playstation 2) games?
I am working mainly on Nintendo Consoles at the moment. But you never know...

28. Do you think you have demonstrated all the music power of the AMIGA in your compositions?
Maybe there is a way to get even more out of the machine, but it would have been too much effort. I was pretty happy with my results.

29. What software do you use to compose your music?
I always designed my own sound tools, but I also use commercial software. Our current sound tool is called "MusyX" and is an editor environment for the complete sound data of a game. For composing and sequencing I use Steinberg Cubase SX & VST and my main sample editor is Wavelab.

30. Who was your favorite C64 musician and did you meet any of them?
I really liked the works of Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway and Ben Daglish. I saw Rob Hubbard once short, but I didn't really meet any of the guys yet.

31. I would also like to work as a game audio professional. What do you suggest?
Getting into the business is not so easy anymore as it was in the early years. You'll need to contact and keep contacting every possible developer out there for quite some time I would guess, so this is nothing for the short term. You can send demos (best CD-R) with a couple of your compositions to the contact person (ask for their head of development or recruiting or head of the audio department) of the company.

Another way for demos and exposure is the internet. Upload your songs to your website or one of the many independent artist music sites and promote your pages (for example in your email and online forum signatures).

Visit ECTS (in London) and / or E3 (in L.A.) and the various Game Developer Conferences. This can be expensive, but you have a chance to build good contacts. A good web site for game developers is Gamasutra. Here is another one: GameDev.net

A free way to get closer to the business is a mailing list that you should join and participate in:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gameaudiopro/

There are lots of game audio professionals on this group, yet it is open for the public, so everybody can join and talk.

Another great new development is the Game Audio Network Guild, a brand new organization which focuses on the advancement of game / interactive audio and the community surrounding it. They have an annual members fee though...

32. Can I also send demos to you?
The easiest way to provide me with a demo is if you upload your songs to a (your) web page (or use mp3.com) and I will listen to it when I find the time. But please don't expect a thorough review or individual advice...

33. Why did you move to the US?
I got the opportunity to work at Factor 5 and doing really high quality products instead of doing uninspired multimedia productions in Germany, only to pay my rent. Germany is currently not very desirable in terms of games development, every important companies are in the US (mostly West coast), or have subsidiaries like Blue Byte for example. It's a hard market and you can get lost if you are not in the right place.

34. When is your exact birthday?
March 2nd 1968
